I got asked "What I can do to stop the arguments that happen 4 nights a week?" Well, here's what helps most families and it's waaayyyy easier than you'd think -
Let’s stop having sudden arguments with our kids about stupid things at escalated times.
There's a better way: Instead - Let’s give our child a couple of hours to de-escalate before we deal with issues. Even better, wait until tomorrow.
When our kids have Autism they need us to hold off on correcting or dealing with issues until they have calmed down. Usually, let's wait until tomorrow.
If it’s a sudden argument: E.g. about getting off the computer or starting dinner or some other change that our child doesn’t want to make – then we’ve already lost before we started.
Let’s deal with the issue but not let it become a “secondary” argument about overall attitude, a lack of appreciation, or anything like that. If we are going to have that conversation, we need to have it tomorrow when our child is not upset about being of the computer, or whatever the issue was.
As parents, we want to solve things right there and then, but it is just not going to help. Have the hard conversations and another time, on another day, with a milkshake in hand, while playing with Lego etc etc. Let's do conflict in an autism-friendlier way.
In fact, I feel so strongly about this - that I made a bunch of 10 videos that show you exactly how to help your son or daughter to do really well with you at home - see them at our video page.
Also, if you need anything else - I pretty much mean anything - I'd love to get you what you need - just email me back and tell me. I'll try to support you.
Also, if your child would gain something from Lego group, Minecraft group, Girls' group, Boys' group, Social games group or any other social skills group, then let us know at www.amazingskills.com.au
:) Good luck with it all,
Michael Clark
